Ants are known for their industriousness that these insects are often used as examples when teaching children good habits. However, these insects can also become pests especially when they start infesting your home.

When left unattended, ants can become a pest in your home. Some of the reasons why these insects can turn into a nuisance on your property are the following:

They Come in Sheer Numbers

An ant colony can house thousands of ants. If one of the worker ants go back to the colony telling everyone about ripe fruits or a jar of sugar, expect that you will find ant trails to and from your house.

Keep in mind that the trails you see outside the colony are just a portion of what is inside the colony. The rest of the colony still includes the babies, the males, and of course the queen, which is responsible for laying eggs.

Ant Stings

Another worst thing about ants is that the type of ant that is infesting your home might sting or bite. Everyone knows that red ants are the ones that bite. However, the bite of red ants is harmless as compared to other species that have stings and bites that result in severe reactions.

Species like Bullet Ant may have the most painful sting, but a Jack Jumper Ant sting can cause death. This is the main reason why you should also be careful in leaving an ant infestation unattended as the species that may be living near your home may cause health hazards.

With all these reasons in mind, you will understand why ants can become a problem especially when you have kids around. You need to know how to get rid of them properly.

How to Use Ant Bait Stations

There are many ways to achieve ant control and deal with an infestation. However, the use of an ant bait station is considered the most economical and easiest method that you can try.

Bait stations usually look like small plastic containers or boxes with baits inside. Baits come in liquid, solid, and gel and the containers should be strategically placed in areas where ants have been spotted. Its use eliminates the common issue of baits drying out and provides ants with a continuous supply of liquid.

If you are considering the use of ant bait stations, below are ways on how you can use it effectively:

  • Most bait stations are configured to be used immediately. This means that there is no need for you to active the bait inside the container. Just remove the product from its packaging and place it along with areas where you saw an ant activity.

  • You can also place it near the trails but not directly on their pathways. It is among the important baiting tips that you should keep in mind.

  • Keep the hole of the bait stations facing up so that they can consume the bait whenever they pass through it.

  • It is recommended that you place it on counters, under sinks, and behind appliances.

  • The duration of time for replacing the bait stations differ from where you placed them. You can wait for 3 months to replace the ones you have placed indoors while you need to replace the ones placed outdoors after 6 weeks.

Another way to tell if a replacement is needed is by peeking inside the bait stations and check the bait inside. If it is empty, then you need to replace it with a new one.

The effectiveness of the baits depends on the active ingredient. You should remember that it is considered a slow-acting infestation solution since there are specific considerations before it can eliminate the infestation.

Some considerations include the size of the colony. Smaller colonies can die within hours, but larger colonies may take a week or even longer die.

Killing the ants will take a couple of hours or days before the baits work throughout the entire colony. The first ant that accessed the bait must be able to share it with the other ants and most importantly, the queen. Once the queen consumes the bait, she will no longer be able to reproduce results to the entire colony to cease and die.
